Independent Bible Church Rallies for "Let's Eat" SmilePacks™
by Karen Coles, long-time COTN partner from Port Angeles, Washington
Last fall, after giving a presentation about “Let’s Eat” SmilePacks™ to our congregation at Independent Bible Church in Port Angeles, Washington, it was a blessing to watch everyone participate in some way. In order to make the most efficient use of our resources, it seemed wisest to purchase some of the items in bulk quantities, especially the covered plastic containers and the vitamins. A special offering was taken, and $2,668 was donated for the cost of the supplies. A little internet research discovered covered plastic containers for $1 and jars of 1,000 children’s chewable multivitamins for $28. As a result, we were able to assemble 384 “Let’s Eat” SmilePacks™!
One of the things that our church loves about COTN projects is that everyone can always participate at some level, regardless of their individual economic circumstances. Those who were unable to contribute financially to this project jumped on board to collect spoons and plastic tumblers. Each Sunday morning for one month, children and adults alike brought new and like-new spoons to church and deposited them in a special “COTN basket” in the foyer. The next month, people purchased plastic tumblers which were also placed in the basket. Everyone felt good about being able to participate in helping "our COTN children."
In November, during COTN’s annual Some Kind of Miracle benefit season, our church hosted a “Share the Vision” banquet. As part of that event, we were able to display all of the items everyone had donated for the “Let’s Eat” SmilePacks™. The display took up a whole corner of the room and stood seven feet high!
Now people are asking, “What’s our next COTN project?”
