Mr. Kanyama comes to COTN with lots of educational experience.
The new International Christian Academy just opened in newly completed buildings, but there is more building still to be done.
Students Modester and Jackson are excited about their futures now that they're at International Christian Academy.
A new headmaster has been found for the Children of the Nations (COTN) International Christian Academy in Malawi.
Fulgensio T. Kanyama, a Malawian educator with twenty years of experience, joined the COTN family as headmaster of the secondary school at the beginning of July. He assumed the duties from Annie Brown, a COTN Education Consultant in Malawi who was serving as temporary headmaster until a permanent educator was hired.
Mr. Kanyama is excited to become headmaster at the academy where twenty-nine students are enrolled. This fall, the academy will have approximately eighty students attending classes and enrollment is expected to quadruple by 2013.
“Mr. Kanyama has a passion for teaching and learning that will inspire our students to pursue higher academic levels at a university,” says Wendy Brown, COTN International Education Director. “The students are very excited to have him as headmaster.”
As the school administrator, Mr. Kanyama will be hiring new teachers, developing curriculum, and ensuring quality education is provided to our COTN students.
“Currently, he is getting familiar with his new school and assignments,” says Dr. Yobbe Lungu, COTN–Malawi Country Director. “He will work hand in hand with other COTN staff to ensure that all students’ needs are addressed. He will also participate in the design and implementation of the school strategic plan.”
Mr. Kanyama holds a Bachelor of Science in Education, and an advanced certificate in Curriculum Design and Instructional Materials Development.
While teaching secondary school for the Malawi Civil Service, Mr. Kanyama worked as a classroom teacher, farm teacher, boarding master, department head, deputy head teacher, career guidance counselor, and head teacher.
After a short sabbatical where he worked as a mine manager, Mr. Kanyama was principal at Thondwre Village Polytechnic. He facilitated vocational training and skills for young people in the village through a project funded by the Catholic archdioceses in Italy and Malawi.
“His diverse career background and knowledge of curriculum will be an asset to our students and the academic programs we offer,” says Wendy.
Just before joining COTN, Mr. Kanyama worked in a refugee camp under the Jesuit Refugee Services of Malawi. He served as head teacher at the camp secondary school. His work included the management of donations and resources, recruitment of teachers, and work with traumatized youth as they re-entered the education setting.
Mr. Kanyama believes that all students can learn, and he is looking forward to helping COTN children grow into adults who will truly transform their nation.
The secondary school in Malawi is in need of funding to hire more teachers, obtain better supplies, and to help construct the new school building. Donate today to the Malawi Secondary School building fund.
