Devastating Earthquake Hits Dominican Republic's Neighbor, Haiti!

POSTED ON Jan 13, 2010

Haiti, the Caribbean country that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, was hit by a violent earthquake shortly before 5:00pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.

The magnitude 7.0 quake—the most violent to hit Haiti in 200 years—was centered about 10 miles southwest of the capital city of Port-au-Prince and was felt strongly in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, and Cuba—both hundreds of miles away.

The earthquake destroyed buildings and houses and has left thousands homeless in Haiti. While the exact death toll is not yet known, it is expected to be catastrophic.

A word from Chris Clark, Children of the Nations president and CEO

Greetings from Africa,

While en route to Malawi this morning we received word of what could be the largest earthquake in history in Haiti.  We are saddened by the incredible injury and damage that has been done.  Fortunately, we have confirmed that our Dominican staff, children and families sustained no injury or damage.  Praise the Lord for His protection!

COTN–DR is currently assessing our clothing, medical and food stocks in order to respond immediately to our partner ministries in Haiti.  If we are able, we will send all of our current stock of food reserved for our Dominican feeding programs to Haiti.

As financial support from our partners allows, we will send additional supplies to support the victims in Haiti.  We will also need to replenish our depleted inventories so that we may continue to minister to children in our care in the Dominican Republic.

Your help is greatly needed financially.  To DONATE today click here.

We are monitoring this disaster and will give updates as we receive them.

For the children,

Chris Clark,
Founder and CEO
