Summary:

COTN is seeking an individual to manage and coordinate the business and operational activities of KuJAMbula Recording Studio in Lilongwe, Malawi.  The Studio Operations Manager will oversee all day-to-day operations.  (For more information on COTN's KuJAMbula Studio click here.)

LOCATION: Lilongwe, Malawi

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate the operation of a recording studio facility to ensure design and production of quality sound recordings as well as videotaped and slide programs for COTN.
  • Work closely with a qualified candidate in Malawi to train and equip to assume long-term operations of KuJAMbula studio.
  • With the Malawi trainee/candidate, continue to develop and produce FM radio programs to reach out and educate the children of Malawi.  (An approved COTN goal is to create 52 30-minute programs to be aired initially on a partner FM station at African Bible College.)
  • Record, edit and mix sound using manual, digital and computerized techniques. 
  • Coordinate a variety of technical tasks involved in the operation of the recording studio to include setting up and operating equipment to record the session and to mix sounds to achieve the desired effect.
  • Develop new markets and establish charge rates for recording studio services and products; monitor records reflecting operational activities and cost of services; supervise accounting activities pertaining to customer charge.
  • Analyze and discuss program content and structure, scheduling and cost estimation with clients to determine type of media support to include tape recording/CD, videotape or slide/tape program to achieve desired portrayal within budgetary limitations.
  • Determine fiscal requirements for the operation and prepare budgetary recommendation monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budgeted funds.
  • Maintain inventory of required supplies and equipment; evaluate new media equipment and techniques for application within COTN; recommend purchase of new equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Plan and schedule studio time and keep master schedule of monthly clients.  Provide monthly progress report to COTN management.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • This is a support-raising (missionary) position.  Individual must raise personal support from their sphere of influence to offset their salary.
  • Knowledge of studio operations and management, as well as communications, analytical and organizational skills generally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program in Video or Audio Production, Educational Media or related field.
  • Two years experience in studio management, production design, video or audio production facility or related setting to acquire skills necessary to coordinate operational activities of a recording studio facility. 
  • OR, AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE SKILLS:

  • Experience in audio production a must.  Video production experience is a nice to have.
    Experience in sound engineering/mixing and studio setup a must. 
  • Relevant knowledge of all types of sounds equipment to include audio/video mixers, microphone preamps, headphones amps, active and passive microphones, active and passive speakers, matching microphone to the instrument, microphone placement, studio setup for instrumentalists versus vocalists, etc.
  • Experience with Pro Tools and Adobe Audition is a must. 
  • Experience with Cake Walk is nice to have.
  • A good working knowledge of PCs to include the use of all windows tools and Microsoft Office.
  • Should know how to keep all antivirus software updated and clean machines to keep them in top working order.
