Banta Mokelleh

This chiefdom, made up of 50 villages, is a severely undeveloped area of Sierra Leone, and yet ironically has some of the richest mineral deposits of bauxite and rutile in the world. However, in Banta, simple commodities such as clean water, electricity, or other basic conveniences are challenging to find. Illness and disease run rampant, magnified in part by an estimated 45% of the children suffering from malnutrition (according to a recently published UNICEF report). During the rebel war, this area was hit hard and consequently, the children are still suffering the consequences.

In the chiefdom of Banta Mokelleh, COTN programs are serving to bring community development, children’s homes, and sustainable income both to our projects and the community itself. The original 45.3 acres of land first given to COTN has since developed into a producing farm, and has grown to 100 acres, thanks to an additional land gift.

Construction of Banta Children’s Village began in early 2006. This village, once complete, will include three schools (nursery, primary and eventually a secondary school), a chapel, children’s homes, a medical center, dormitories for hosting camps and for visiting team, administration offices, and more.
