Aspects of Care: Mental

School
Our COTN Mallory Jansen Memorial School in Marjay Town, Sierra Leone provides our children with the opportunity for a quality education. The teachers are highly committed to the children and their schooling. The class sizes are much smaller than those in the public school system and there is opportunity for individualized instruction. Our children are taught all of the basic subjects and they are even learning French! They are also involved in many arts and crafts projects (a rare luxury for many public schools, as supplies are scarce). The school’s library (with hundreds of donated books from the U.S.) is very impressive.

Skills Center
As children grow into adulthood, their future livelihood depends on training. In the Dominican Republic, COTN has a skills center where young men and women can learn automotive training, computer training, business skills, and other tools that will allow them to grow and become productive citizens in their country.

Tutoring
What a miracle to see our children soar to the top of their classes in achievement! In Malawi, class standing (ranking) is very important. Our children usually come to our children’s homes extremely malnourished. Sometimes this can permanently affect the development and growth of the brain. Yet, despite the uncertain outlook, we are so proud that a large portion of our children excel in school. Our house parents and staff have been committed to helping this happen by tutoring our children after school and providing a positive learning environment.
