A youth-group or civic-group based fundraiser curriculum that raises awareness of world hunger while at the same time raising funds for COTN’s feeding program or a specific Meal Marathon. The Hunger Experience culminates with a “Famine Feast” or a “Journey of a Starving Child.” During the “Famine Feast” participants fast for 24 hours and then role-play third-world people groups: 5% represent the high-income class and get to eat a full meal; 35% represent the middle-income class and are served rice and beans; and 60% represent the lower-income class and are served small portions of plain rice—if there is enough to go around. The other option is a “Journey of a Starving Child” where guests role-play a real-life story of an orphaned or destitute child as they travel from destination to destination and struggle to survive. Participants will experience their child’s journey, ending with one of four outcomes: rescued by Children of the Nations, juvenile employment, begging, or death. Following the activity, there will be discussion questions and time for reflection with a banquet. The “Journey of a Starving Child” is meant to motivate the group to get actively involved in saving the lives of hungry children, ultimately encouraging the group to participate in COTN’s Meal Marathon. Sometimes, a packaged meal is a child’s only hope to live the next week, day or hour. The activity will promote the amazing effect that you and Children of the Nations has on fighting starvation and malnutrition in places worlds away. A tangible way to teach about world hunger.
