Support Raising FAQs

What does “missionary staff” mean?
Individuals serving as missionary staff are just that—missionaries.  They are required to raise support to offset the costs of their employment.  Through their personal sphere of influence (family, church, neighbors, etc.) individuals seek to create a donor base of supporters/partners willing to provide one-time, monthly, or annual support.

How do I know how much support I’ll need to raise?
All missionary positions at COTN have board-approved salaries.  Individuals create a “budget” (which includes all living expenses, taxes, COTN-related travel, etc.) and submit it for board approval.  COTN will assist you with this process.

Do my supporters pay me directly?
No.  As a missionary, funds are raised for COTN and then assigned to the individual based on the agreed-upon and approved salary.  In order to receive an IRS tax deduction, supporters/partners are required to submit their contribution directly to COTN.  This can be done on a monthly, annually, or one-time basis.  Donations are designated to the individual’s missionary account.  COTN, in turn, compensates the individual in the form of a monthly paycheck.
