Trauma Counseling
A Component of our Village Partnership Program
Many children come to Children of the Nations, either through our full-time care program in our Children’s Homes, through our Village Partnership Programs, or through one of our many community outreaches, suffering from abuse, grief, or trauma.
Orphans, a vulnerable, unprotected group, have not only experienced the immense grief of losing one or both of their parents, but are also at especially high risk of abuse since they have no one looking out for their best interests. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, or abandonment are all too common. Many children and adults have experienced trauma in the midst of civil war or at the hands of rebel soldiers—witnessing death and murder, suffering abuse or attack, or in many cases being forced to commit murder or other atrocities themselves, often beginning with their own family members. Understandably, these experiences have left these individuals broken, guilty, angry, untrusting, and in need of immense emotional healing.
In many developing nations, when even basic medical care is not available, mental health care and counseling services are unheard of. Our Children of the Nations counselors work with children and adults in an effort to provide healing and restore emotional health. US Venture Program counseling teams routinely travel to our countries to work with our national staff, imparting invaluable counseling knowledge and techniques. Using individual and group counseling therapies, our staff has seen great strides toward emotional healing.
