Hunger Experience

The Hunger Experience is a great way to get youth groups or civic-based groups involved in fundraising for Children of the Nations, while raising awareness on world hunger.

What is the Hunger Experience?
The purpose of the Hunger Experience is to give participants an opportunity to experience and understand hunger firsthand and motivate them for action based on their new understanding.

Over the course of four weeks, participants will learn the facts about world hunger, and they will also hear what God has to say about hunger. At the end of the four weeks, the participants will have the chance to fast, serving orphaned and destitute children in Africa and the Dominican Republic by raising funds through pledges for the time they abstain from food. Their Hunger Experience will then culminate in one of three events:  Famine Feast, Journey of a Starving Child, or How to Feed Your Family on $1 a Day.

Famine Feast Participants fast for 24 hours and then role-play people groups during a meal: 5% represent the high-income class and get to eat a full meal; 30% represent the middle-income class and are served rice and beans; and 65% represent the lower-income class and are served small portions of plain rice—if there is enough to go around.

Journey of a Starving Child Guests role-play a real-life story of an orphaned or destitute child as they travel from destination to destination and struggle to survive. Participants will experience one of four outcomes: being rescued by Children of the Nations, finding juvenile employment, begging, or death.

How to Feed Your Family on $1 a Day Groups are divided into three groups: 5% high-income, 30% middle-income, 65% low-income.  The low-income class gets $1, the middle in-come class gets $5 and the high-income class gets $10 to shop for food to feed the whole family for a day.

All three experiences are meant to introduce what Children of the Nations (COTN) is doing around the world, and to get groups to get actively involved in partnering with COTN to transform children. The activity will promote the amazing effect that you and Children of the Nations can have in transforming nations worlds away. This is a tangible way to teach about hope and change.
