Chirombo
Lilongwe, Malawi
The village of Chirombo is located to the northwest of our Njewa Mission Center, approximately an hour’s drive from Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi.
This severely impoverished community consists of approximately 500 households (8,000+ people). It is located in a very remote, extremely underdeveloped part of Malawi, with no electricity and very little access to clean water. Due to the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, 70 percent of the population is under age 25. The majority of women in Chirombo are widowed or divorced and heading up single-parent households. In this village there are Christian churches co-existing with beliefs and practices of the Chewa tribe, which is synonymous with Gule wamkulu (secret societies, voodoo, etc.).
