Mgwayi
Lilongwe, Malawi
The village of Mgwayi is located to the west of the capital city of Lilongwe, right behind and within walking distance of Children of the Nations’ Njewa Mission Center. This community consists of 200 households (3,000+ people). Due to the high prevalence of HIV/AIDS, 70 percent of the population is under age 25. The majority of women are widowed or divorced and heading up single-parent households. Residents of Mgwayi are members of the Chewa tribe, which is synonymous with Gule wamkulu (secret societies, voodoo, etc.). Traditional tribal spiritual practices are predominant.
