Pueblo Nuevo

Dominican Republic

Pueblo Nuevo is a situated in the “lata” (poorest) part of the city of Barahona, where for years it has been forgotten by the government and political representatives.  Its population consists of more than 500 Dominican families.  The entire community does not have electricity or water, forcing families to walk two kilometers in search of it, and they lack many basic necessities for survival.  Before Children of the Nations (Niños de las Naciones, as we are known in the Dominican Republic) began ministering to this village, the closest school was three kilometers away.  In order to attend, the children had to walk, which was dangerous, and therefore parents were not inclined to have their children make the trek to school.  There are few employment opportunities, and the majority of youth dedicate themselves to the various forms of delinquency: drugs, robbery, violence, etc.

In 2007, through our Village Partnership Program, Children of the Nations constructed a vocational skills center in Pueblo Nuevo, with the with the purpose of discovering solutions to these social problems.  By offering skills training in various trades, not only to youth but also to the parents, the Skills Center provides the opportunity to learn a profession allowing them to work and earn money with dignity, with the goal of diminishing the delinquency.  The following year, Children of the Nations constructed another building, a two-room school house to meet the needs of the preschool and primary school–aged children of Pueblo Nuevo.
